SANDRA DAVALOS

RESIDENT ARTIST

A Dallas native, Oak Cliff based artist and designer, Davalos has cultivated a unique and diverse path for herself through her intricate passion of art, design and music which has led her to explore several outlets of creation and expression including songwriting, illustration, poetry, with the latest being fashion and jewelry design.

Her mission in life is to unite humanity through art by encouraging the artist in all and inspiring everyone to nurture their inner world with what makes them uniquely them in order to co-create a better world where people sincerely care about people and their communities by selfless giving and sharing experiences, skills, knowledge, etc. as a true act of love for the self and collective. She believes in a world where conscious individuals can thrive by trusting in their vision as a form of quiet revolution.

Through her experimental electronic music she has garnered the attention of D Magazine as “the Best New Singer-Songwriter in Dallas” and also featured in the Dallas Observer, Gorilla vs. Bear and The Dallas Morning news: “There is nothing in D-FW to compare to Sandra Davalos’ project moth face. It is at once quiet and haunting, timeless and immediate.” Davalos’ lyrics are poetic and theoretical, her voice - “a meditative instrument that mines silence and delivery.” All this achieved through her own sheer will and determination for self expression with no formal education. From a young age, Davalos loved to sing and perform and nurtured her soul with beautiful melodies, lyrics and an eclectic variety of music which culminated into a unique essence she loves to explore and express.

She founded and currently curates the global humanitarian art collective Cemetery Sisters which serves as a publishing house for art, poetry, short film and music label whose artists have gained global recognition as independent and original creators. The vision for this project was to empower artists from around the world by releasing their art in physical format (ie: cassette, zine, vhs, etc). Once the production is complete, each artist is gifted half of the physical releases produced and the proceeds of the second half go toward funding the next release planned by the collective, forming a secure and continuous means of DIY art release.

Currently Sandra has a focus in building a fashion and design opus, being motivated by sustainable solutions, natural beauty and timeless aesthetics; she explores silhouettes and materials as a means to express innovative, yet minimal concepts. Her strength being execution of anything she can design. She is a self taught zero waste designer pioneering transformable garments. She graduated with fashion apparel design, technical pattern making and costume design degrees. During her studies she participated in Diffa’s Night of Stars fashion show and after graduation, she won FGI’s Grand Prize scholarship with her zero waste, transformable garments elevating the competition moving forward to sustainable design. This opportunity allowed her to study couture techniques in Paris. Such as in her music, she creates garments that are simple and poetic, with deep meaning only fully understood by a few, but admired by everyone, as true art always is. Not anyone can make an asset out of silence, but Sandra has found a way to channel a divine energy into everything she does.
